The Greater Good and Hot Rails to Hell

Last night The Greater Good and Hot Rails to Hell packed about a million people into Lovejoys for their much anticipated show. It was the first show of the brand new band The Greater Good and the first show in a very long time for Hot Rails to Hell. It was obvious that everyone was excited to see what The Greater Good had come up with. With members from The Roller, Fuckwork, Til Death and Speedealer, they certainly have some talent to work with and they definitely made use of it last night. Their upbeat, fast and loud music didn't sound much like what I have heard from The Roller, but it was great nonetheless. It would be kind of pointless if they sounded exactly the same as another band. Everyone I talked to after the show had enjoyed it, as did I. Hot Rails to Hell, playing their first gig after a very long hiatus, went on next. I was excited to see them and they definitely got everyone's attention with their energetic music. Their punk and early heavy metal influences were obvious in their music but didn't overshadow the unique sound they had to offer. They were fun to watch and put on a great live show. Neither band out-shined the other and overall it was a terrific show.

Fur King

Last night Fur King and Dixie Witch (post here) played at Lovejoys for Fur King bassist Andy Pfeiffer's birthday. Fur King went on around 10 to a pretty packed house. I had seen them before but it had been a while so I was excited to see them again. I dug their sound immediately and was basically rocking out from the first song. They've got a kind of 70s, very southern heavy rock thing going on and it totally works. The set itself was well executed and fun to watch. They introduced nearly every song by claiming that it was about having sex. Unfortunately, I didn't manage to memorize their lyrics so I can neither confirm nor deny this statement. But whatever they were about, they were all energetically and enthusiastically played. Dixie Witch played after and were badass as usual. It was a great show and everyone seemed to have a great time.

Yob

Last night I went out to the new Beauty Ballroom for the first time to see Yob play with Eagle Claw (post here) and Skycrawler. Unfortunately I only caught the end of Skycrawler's set but what I heard sounded great so I'm definitely going to make it a point to go to one of their shows soon. Eagle Claw played an exhilarating set as always. Yob took the stage around midnight to an enthusiastic crowd. The venue was packed and the head banging commenced the moment the music did. While obviously a doom metal band, I don't think they can be just tossed in with a bunch of other bands and forgotten about. Their music is comprised of more than what can be described by just one genre. Mike Scheidt captivated the audience with his juxtaposition of deep, intense vocals with occasional higher pitched shrieking. Their lengthy songs never felt interminable or overdrawn but instead were purposeful and powerful. These guys obviously mean business and played to a crowd who gratefully accepted further proof of their greatness.

The Man-Eaters of Tsavo

Last night I ventured down to San Antonio to see The Man-Eaters of Tsavo play at Nightrocker. I hadn't been to a show in San Antonio in a long time so I was excited to go meet up with an old friend and see an awesome band. The venue was pretty cool despite the fact that there were these random leopard print clad people who jumped up on stage between sets to sing along with the music. At least the bands were good! The Man-Eaters of Tsavo played second to last. I hadn't heard of them before so I was interested to see what they were all about. Their music was a kind of blues-y metal with some psychedelic tinges. The sound was heavy but definitely blues influenced. Their songs were really long and mostly instrumental but they never felt overdrawn or tedious. Guitarist/vocalist Eddie Hernandez played some awesome, intense guitar solos but didn't overpower the rest of the band like other guitarists sometimes do. Bassist Roberto Hofmann clearly knew his stuff and played some really interesting and different bass lines. James Moody played drums and not only provided a good rhythm for the songs, but definitely added his own punch to the mix. They were great and collaborated well to produce some really awesome music. Hopefully we can get them to play in Austin soon!

Pickled Punks

I hate Friday the 13th. I'm stupidly superstitious so I always get all paranoid when that day rolls around. So I'm not even joking when I say that I almost didn't go out at all haha. But I'm really glad that I did because I got to see the awesome local band, Pickled Punks, at Headhunters. Apparently a pickled punk is some kind of freaky human fetus in formaldehyde which, I think, is exactly why they chose it as their name. Their music was twangy but fast and loud. It was crazy and ridiculous and humorous and intense. Mike, on guitar, performed flawlessly, while upright bassist Jasen kept up the lively but intense tempo. Drummer Destin smashed his drum set, keeping time and adding his own style to the music. All the while, vocalist Spike was all over the place. Even while thrashing around in the middle of the crowd or on top of the bar, he never missed a beat. I had a great time at the show and I hope to see them again soon!

Tia Carrera and Dixie Witch

Tia Carrera and Dixie Witch, along with several other bands (including Lower Class Brats, see my earlier post) played at Red 7 Saturday night. I had never seen Tia Carrera play before so I wasn't sure what I was in for. Instrumental, experimental and experiential is the best way I can describe the show. Experimental in the heaviest sense of the word. I was totally blown away by the show. Their long songs seemed to put the crowd in a kind of trance and I think it can easily be said that everyone was enthralled. Their music is something that has to be experienced. I had heard some of their stuff beforehand, but it was nothing like their live show. It was pretty much amazing and I'll be looking out for their future shows. Stoner rock badasses Dixie Witch played after them and rocked it as usual. I've seen them several times and I always enjoy their shows. Drummer Trinidad Leal, who is also lead vocalist, has a gravely but distinctly tough voice. Their music has a definitive stoner sound but they have a very unique and clever way of putting it all together. Overall, the show was a success and I am thrilled to have experienced it.

Venomous Maximus

To kick off free week, several bands played a show at Beauty Bar Sunday night. Unfortunately, I missed the first few bands and failed on my pics of Skycrawler (I'll post about you guys next time you play!), but I caught Venomous Maximus and Ancient VVisdom. Ancient VVisdom was great, as always; check out my previous post about them! I saw Venomous Maximus a few months ago in Houston with, ironically, AVV. They were great then, and they lived up to their standard Sunday night. Gregg Higgins' booming vocals resounded throughout the bar, capturing the audience's attention. His, as well as fellow guitarist Christian Larson's, guitar tone was sharp, with their riffs rising and falling, creating some pretty forceful music. Drummer Bongo provided some great accented drumming. The resonating tone and steady rhythm of bassist Trevi Biles nicely rounded out the music. Overall their music was well constructed and very engaging and everyone seemed to enjoy it.

Eskisi Gibi (Istanbul, Turkey)

The main thing that I wanted to do on my vacation in Turkey was to take pictures, namely of a local band. Luckily, I went to a record store on one of my first days here and met a cool local metal head. I happened to mention that I really wanted to see a show here, and he offered to take my sister and I to a hardcore/punk show the next night. Despite the pouring rain that night, the venue, Dogz Star, was packed. The band, Eskisi Gibi, roughly translated as "like the old days," or "as before," was badass. While definitely a punk band, the music is relatively melodic but with the characteristic harsh, screaming vocals of punk music. I would say that their music is different from a typical American punk band although I'm not sure if that sound is typical of Turkish punk bands or not. Although he is capable of singing in English, the vocalist chooses to sing exclusively in Turkish. The show was awesome and not only because it was in Istanbul. I really enjoyed the music and it was obvious that everyone else at the show did, too. I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to shoot a local Turkish band!

Mala Suerte and Las Cruces

Friday night I saw yet another awesome show at Red 7. I know I say that every time, but I don't go to the shows of bands I don't like. Mala Suerte went on first and defied their name with a kick ass show. I think they're a little too viscous to be called doom metal, but if you throw stoner/psychedelic metal in the pot, you'd be about right. Eyehategod, among others, has been an obvious influence on their unique, thick sound and gruff vocals. They didn't rush through the songs but certainly didn't have a lack of energy. I enjoyed the music and the whole band's stage presence.

Las Cruces, on the other hand, I wouldn't hesitate to call doom metal. They hail from San Antonio and played the last show of the evening, also on the outside stage. Their heavy bass line and gnarly riffs exemplified the genre while at the same not falling into the same basic mold. Their drummer, Paul De Leon is also their vocalist which is rather unusual but they certainly pulled it off. I can think of a few bands who might be boring without their energetic vocalist, but the same cannot be said about Las Cruces. His clear but ferocious voice boomed out at the audience and was a great accompaniment to his drumming as well as to the rest of the music. The show was fantastic and I don't think anyone could disagree with me.

Dethrone and Night Siege

Finally another post! I'm almost done with finals so now it's time to get back to the blog. Wednesday I saw Dethrone and Night Siege at a free show at Emo's. Dethrone is a badass local hardcore band. They took the stage first and caused quite a ruckus in the crowd. Vocalist Wes Beasley jumped around the stage spitting out the lyrics while guitarists Wes Linkenhoger and Jamus Reichelt kept up with their ferocious playing. Bassist Liam Cahill and drummer Jake Alexander knocked out the rhythm section.

Night Siege is another local hardcore band but with a more metal influenced sound. Vocalist Manny Tapia has a gruff, metalish voice which is accompanied well by guitarists Kevin Alexander and Oneal Rodge's lightning fast playing. Their music is definitely hardcore but, with the intense vocals, becomes more of a metal/hardcore fusion. Foster Dansby played some sick bass lines while drummer Elijah Horgen's drumsticks flew around his kit.

The show was a lot of fun, although the brutal pit banged up my knees. But it was totally worth it and the large crowd was obviously having a good time. I can't wait to see both bands again!

The Blood Royale and Boars

It seems to me that most of the good shows that I've been to lately have been at Red 7 and last night was no different. The Blood Royale and Boars played the outside stage. I've seen them both several times before and I always have a great time at their high energy shows. Both bands play an intense brand of metal that always sounds original and spot on. The lovely gentleman of The Blood Royale always put on a good show and they played a solid set last night. Boars followed suit with their distinct harsh sound. I greatly enjoyed the show and am looking forward to hearing both bands play again. For more info, check out their facebook pages! Sorry for the short post, but finals are coming up and I have to spend most of my time studying (blah). So I'm going to be MIA until around the new year, but after that I'll be back at it!

Ancient VVisdom and Eagle Claw

One of the after shows for Fun Fun Fun Fest was held at Red 7 on Saturday night. Doors were at 9:00 and the venue quickly reached capacity as people flocked downtown to see the myriad bands who were preparing to perform. Local bands Ancient VVisdom and Eagle Claw were two of the many bands that played that night. I've seen both of them play several times and I have yet to be disappointed.

Ancient VVisdom played first on the outside stage. I have to say that I have yet to see a band quite like AVV. Their music, stage set-up and instrumentation is extremely unique and I have no doubt that they will be successful with their musical endeavors. Call it acoustic death rock or rock and roll metal or whatever you want, they have something very different and totally awesome going on. Vocalist/percussionist Nathan Opposition set up front and center with his unusual choice of instruments. In addition to two floor toms and two cymbals, a large knife acted as another percussive instrument and he used a thick chain in place of drumsticks for several songs. His vocals, smooth but often filled with rage, speak of Satanic themes and the inherent evil in the world. His brother Michael played electric guitar which was well accented by Ribs' acoustic guitar. Trans Am, on bass, rounded out the mix. To add to the ambiance, they set up an altar at the very front of the stage with candles and a sign that says "Abandon All Hope."

Eagle Claw played later on the inside stage. I first saw them not too long after I moved here, in February or March, and have seen them play several times since then. Their heavy instrumental music sets them apart from many other generic metal bands in Austin. They love what they do and they do it well. The often drawn out, but quite nimble riffs by guitarists Matt Rade and Mike Gonz never fail to impress me. Their sound is really unlike many other bands out there; they manage to sound heavy without needing to race through their songs. Their music really stands well on it's own and has no need for vocals. Their songs are quite lengthy but they hold it together the whole way through without wavering or falling short. The precise drumming of Bart Butler and strong bass playing of Luther Smalls contribute just as much to the overall sound. Sometimes the bass and drums serve to merely back up the guitars but that is not the case with Eagle Claw. They're obviously going in a different direction from many other local bands, and they seem to have been successful so far.

Toxic Holocaust

So last night Toxic Holocaust played at Red 7 here in Austin. I had really wanted to go and I was bummed because I thought that you had to have a Fun Fun Fun Fest wristband to get in. But it turned out that I just had to pay a cover to see them so I was excited about that. Joel Grind formed the band in 1999 and hasn't stopped manipulating his musical style since. While they are definitely a metal band, hardcore punk undeniably has had a prominent influence on their music. Right from the start, they came out in full force. Joel's gravely vocals and heavy handed guitar playing really got the crowd going. Bassist Phil Gnaast and drummer Nicholas T. Rage didn't miss a beat and maintained the rushed pace of the music. The dark themes of their songs really came together well with Joel's gruff vocals and the fiery instrumentation. There was quite a pit going, and it was obvious that the crowd was as worked up about the show as ever.

Pierced Arrows, Krum Bums

I've been to some great shows this year, but I have to say seeing Pierced Arrows at Lovejoys last night tops the list. Guitarist/vocalist Fred Cole has been involved in the music scene for a long time which is made evident by his badass instrumentation and confidence on stage. He's clearly a maverick doing his own thing. His wife Toody threw out some incredible bass lines that betray her years of experience. Both Fred and Toody are alumni of their previous band, Dead Moon, a rough rock and roll band that disbanded in 2006. Toody, who shares vocals with her husband, had an awesomely acerbic voice that I heard compared to a spitting cobra. Kelly Halliburton held it down with his impassioned drumming. I'd have to say my favorite song of the evening was the last one, called Paranoia. The lyrics were agonizing and exposed their exceptional skill and powerful love of and dedication to their music.

Earlier, on Saturday night I went down to Red 7 to hear Krum Bums play for my weekly dose of good ol' punk rock. The whole band spent the entire show tearing up the stage and murdering their instruments. Luckily the stage didn't collapse while lead vocalist Dave Tejas demanded the audience's attention with his biting voice. Guitarists Trae Dog and Justin Hall and bassist Ry Meyer raced through the songs at an unstoppable pace, while Nick Kasten kept up with some fierce drumming. Although the set list was diverse, the execution of it was cohesive and showed that they clearly know what they're doing. The audience responded enthusiastically so props to Krum Bums for putting on a great show.

Danava

I wasn't sure what to expect from the Oregon-based band, Danava, who played at Mohawk last night. I had heard positive reviews so I trekked down there to check them out. Their sound was very unique and unusual and their music captivated me within the first few songs. While clearly influenced by Black Sabbath, I also heard Clutch references thrown around quite a bit. Their heavy emphasis on guitar riffs and drawn out vocals contributed to their singular sound. Considering the large, boisterous crowd, the show could have easily taken place on the outside stage. When the show ended, the persistent crowd demanded an encore and they happily obliged. The show was deemed a success by everyone and I hope to hear more from them in the future.

Lower Class Brats

So last night I was happy to be able to see Lower Class Brats at Red 7. I saw them back in July and they had put on a good show, so I was interested in seeing them again. They didn't disappoint. Well executed straight punk rock always makes for a good show. While I can name a few bands where the members just stand there and play, the same can not be said about Lower Class Brats. They played with the energy of a band playing their most important show. The audience, although smaller than usual, started a mini mosh pit and clearly loved their fast, heated show. Vocalist Bones DeLarge, red faced and passionate, commanded the stage, violently spewing his lyrics at the crowd. After 15 years, they're still rocking like the day they started.

Sabbath Crow

Last night was the benefit for Houston at Headhunters, and I was thrilled to finally be able to see Sabbath Crow. After a year hiatus, they returned to the stage a few weeks ago at Red 7. The show last night I have to say, was unlike anything I have seen or heard before. Their sometimes eerie and almost psychedelic sounds coupled strikingly with guitarist and vocalist J. Bybee's rough growling voice to produce a very unique sound. J. and his wife, bassist Kristin Bybee, were awesome together on stage and obviously fed off of each other's energy. All in all, they executed their particular brand of hard rock boldly and passionately, to great effect. The night was a great success and it seemed that, given the number of people there, a lot of money was raised for Houston.

One Good Lung and The Dirty Charley Band

Last night I had the opportunity to see two very different but awesome local shows. First I went down to G and S Lounge to see One Good Lung. They're all friends of mine and I always look forward to seeing them play. They're a very dynamic and animated all chick stoner rock/metal band. Guitarist/vocalist Aimee Lane clearly enjoyed being on stage, while bassist Mel Krenek did an awesome job of holding down the bass line. Amber Lucille rounded out the trio with her solid drumming. Their set consisted of several original songs as well as covers of songs by both The Melvins and Roky Erickson. After that show, I headed downtown to Beerland to see The Dirty Charley Band. They're another one of my local favorites. Although the band seems to be influenced by country, they consider themselves more stringband metal than anything else. The back of their shirts say "Death to False Country," which I find to be very witty. They always seem to have a blast on stage and their energy is contagious. The obvious absence of drummer Sean Weingartner was perplexing, but they carried on well anyway. Overall, it was a great night and I was happy to be able to see both bands.

Saviours and Weedeater

I was excited to see Saviours and Weedeater Thursday night at Emo's and I certainly wasn't disappointed. First of all, I like Emo's a lot. The inside stage gives you the opportunity to get up close and really see the band in action. I was sorry to hear that they will be shutting down soon. I saw Saviours, who are from Oakland, California, a few months ago at Red 7 and they kicked ass, so I was looking forward to seeing them again. They played a very energetic and engaging set that everyone seemed to get into. My favorite part of going to see a show is seeing the band members in their element and clearly enjoying what they're playing, and I definitely felt that from both bands. I like Weedeater, who are originally from Wilmington, NC, a lot so I was excited to see them play. Before the show, I asked drummer Keith "Keko" Kirkum to play the title track off of God Luck and Good Speed which they did for their first song. Their aggressive playing and intense vocals made for a good live show. Overall it was a great experience and I think I can say that everyone had a good time.

400 Blows

I saw 400 Blows for the first time when they opened up for Butthole Surfers at Emo's East a few weeks ago. I thought they were awesome so I was excited that they were coming back. The show was at Mohawk inside and despite a disappointing turnout, it was a great show. Vocalist Skot Alexander was all over the place on stage and totally got the crowd going with his antics. I really enjoyed hearing guitarist Scott Martin play his characteristic loud, chaotic riffs with lots of distortion. Drummer Kevin Fitzgerald did some intense drumming, choosing to play holding his drumsticks backwards. Overall it was a great show. I caught up with Scott Martin the next day to find out a little bit more about the band.

Me: Ok so how did y'all come up with your name?

Scott: 400 blows is the name of a French film, I highly recommend it.. However, I also highly recommend the movies of Jim Varney.. So.....

M: How long have you guys been a band and are you all founding members?

S: The band has been around for about 15 years, Kevin and I are the new kids, Skot is the founding member.

M: What's the story behind not having a bassist?

S: Not necessary, we have our own little dynamic that we rather enjoy. Plus, how would we pay him? No thanks!

M: Who writes the songs?

S: We all write everything together, although, I heard a rumor that Barry Manilow writes the songs. Wow! How bad was that joke?

M: What has been your favorite show/venue/city that you've played?

S: Probably the greatest town we've ever played, hands down, is Eugene, Oregon, real nice people, real open minded.... Just kidding, fuck that place. We usually do well in Chicago, New York, SF, LA, Baltimore, and Austin... I have noticed, after being out on tour for so long, almost every city has it's pocket of awesome. They all kind of rule, and it's always a blast making new friends and finding said pockets... Except Eugene, Oregon. Seriously, I repeat, fuck that place!

M: And what are your musical and nonmusical inspirations?

S: We all listen to a lot of different stuff. Not to sound cliche, but in the van we're pretty much bumping everything and anything... I don't know how much that influences what we do though... I think personally we're inspired by torment, depression, puppies, ice cream, the devil, time travel, the future, the winter olympics, and the current economic crisis. Oh, and dub-step, that shit's juuust great.

HOD, Serpentis and Whore of Bethlehem

There was finally a good show this Friday! It was Black Metal Friday at The Scoot Inn on the east side. The lineup consisted of HOD, Serpentis from NOLA, and local band Whore of Bethlehem. Whore of Bethlehem, who describe themselves as black/death metal with some thrash influences, opened with a formidable set. They put on a good show and have a lot ahead of them. Hailing from New Orleans, Serpentis rocked the outside stage with their satanic black metal set, influenced mainly by Scandinavian black metal. The vocalist, Daemon had great stage presence and intensity. His somewhat daunting appearance and growling vocals added to the show experience. HOD closed out the night on the inside stage. Vocalist Vladibeer Reebs began the show with his usual "We are HOD, and we play fuckin metal!" Reminiscent of Lemy's statement before Motorhead shows, it riled up the crowd for their awesome set. Their blackened death metal set was loud, fast and intense. Hair was flying and they didn't rest the entire set. I had a great time and it seemed that everyone else did, too.
